A Castiglioni + P G Castiglioni

The Italian brothers, Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni are iconic lighting designers of the twentieth century. In 1960 the duo's designs were launched by Flos, where new technology was used in an innovative way to create artificial lighting, for Italy and beyond.

Pier Giacomo the elder brother was born in 1913. After studying architecture at Milan Polytechnic, the designer taught and wrote about urban plans and buildings, his text 'Fifty Significant Squares in the Milan of the Future' published in 1938. In 1937 Pier founded the 'Architecture, Urban Buildings and Research into Industrial Design' practice, with his siblings to design city plans but equally furniture and lighting. His works are now on display at MoMA in New York, RIBA in London and even at the Modern Art Museum in Sao Paulo.

Achille, the younger brother graduated from his architecture studies in 1944. Then in joining his brother's firm, he started to play with materials, shape and form. In 1956 Achille founded the group 'Artistic Design for Industry', where creative and often sculptural solutions were found for modern industry.
