Axel Kufus trained as a carpenter and at the beginning of his career, he worked alongside sculptors Richard Mühlemeier and Ulrike Holthöfer. Kufus attended the Bad Wildungen wood technical school and HdK Berlin in Germany. He forces on sequential furniture and production operations for simple furniture and experimental prototypes.
Near the end of the 1980s, he founded his own design studio Werkstudio in Berlin. In 1993, he became a professor at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, followed by teaching at the Berlin University of Arts UdK in 2004, specialising in the Institute of Product and Process Design. Currently, Axel Kufus is part of the artistic advisory board on the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations and on the scientific advisory board of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
Kufus collaborated with Nils Holger Moormann to produce the Egal and FNP shelving systems, which can be configured and rearranged as desired.
