Bjørn Wiinblad

Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) was a Danish multi-platform artist known for his delicate and whimsical used of intricate lines and elegant colour palette. Although renowned for his work in ceramics, he displayed his talent across a variety of media such as tapestries, ceramics, posters, textiles and much more. Unlike many functionalist contemporary artists, Wiinblad romanticized his designs, which can be seen in his iconic ceramic Magic Flute series (1959).

Born in Copenhagen in 1918, Wiinblad showed signs of talent in drawing and creating fanciful worlds. After his apprenticeship as a typographer at the age of 17, Wiinblad taught himself ceramics and cultivated his skills across multiple platforms. His work with Nymeolle and Rosendahl introduced his designs to millions of homes.

Wiinblad won the International Design Award in 1965 and Haandvaerkerforeningens Aereshaandvaerker in 1974. He was also named Man of the Year in New York in 1985 and was awarded the Bakkens Oscar in 1989.
