George Sowden

George Sowden was born in Leeds, England in 1942, and attended Gloucester College of Art in the 1960s as a student of Architecture. Moving to Milan in 1970, Sowden worked with Ettore Sottsass and Olivetti, later going on to co-found the Memphis Group.

As an active member of the Memphis Group, Sowden helped define an era of 1980s pop sensibility, utilising colour and tone in new and exciting ways and pushing the boundaries of aesthetic creation. In 1981, the same year that the Memphis Group was founded, George Sowden established his own studio, Sowden Design, which has gone on to work with numerous world-famous companies and won an array of awards.
