Henning Koppel

Henning Koppel (1918-1981) played a key role in the development of modern Danish design and was largely responsible for defining the classic Scandinavian mid-century style that is so closely associated with the brand Georg Jensen.

Koppel trained as a painter and a sculptor but gained international fame in his work as as a silversmith. In 1946 he joined the Danish silverware and homewares company Georg Jensen and produced an extensive collection of sculptural bowls, jewellery and cutlery which established the brand at the forefront of modern Danish design.

Koppel is particularly noted for the effortless way in which his designs combine understated beauty with function. He considered himself an anti-functionalist and favoured soft fluid lines and organic forms over the prevailing industrial, functionalist aesthetic.
