Jørn Utzon
The architect of the Sydney Opera house and iconic modernist designer Jørn Utzon studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen in 1942.
Utzon, like many architects affected by World War II, fled to neutral Sweden. There he worked with Hakon Ahlberg for the duration of the war. He then went onto Finland and started to work with Alvar Aalto. Over the next decade, he travelled extensively, visiting Morocco, Mexico, Japan, the United States, China, India, and Australia.
His architectural projects were mainly for Danish clients such as the Fredensborg Housing Estate, Bagsvaerd Church and the Skagen Nature Center. Although he was chosen to design the Sydney Opera House in 1959.
