Tapio Wirkkala (1915 - 1985) was born in Hanko, Finland.
Known as the versatile genius of design Wirkkala's contribution to design includes everything from glassware to the design of banknotes and graphic art. During his career, Wirkkala participated in many international exhibitions, as well as being the artistic director of the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki for many years. He won a large number of awards, including three gold medals at the Triennale in Milan in 1951, followed by another three in 1954.
2015 marks the centenary of this iconic designer and sees the re-issue of the Wirkkala bottle vase. To celebrate the 100th birthday of Tapio Wirkkala, Iittala has re-released the designer's mouth-blown glass bottle vases. Originally in production between 1959 and 1968, the bottle returns to Iittala's range in a limited edition numbered series. Available during 2015 only, the bottles will bear a centenary engraving and number from 1 to 2015.
