Tea Trolley 901 Anniversary Edition, 1936

Tea Trolley 901 Anniversary Edition by Alvar Aalto for Artek.

In celebration of twentytwentyone’s 25th anniversary, Artek and twentytwentyone delved into the Artek archives and revisited an early incarnation of the Aalto Tea Trolley for this special edition.

Both trays are made of natural birch, each wooden element finished in a honey-tone, water-based lacquer – with the exception of the black-stained handle and white wheels.

Each trolley marked with a brass plaque.

The tea trolley was inspired by British tea culture, which the architects Aino and Alvar Aalto had encountered on their many travels and by the Japanese woodwork and architecture, they admired. With a frame composed of two birch lamella loops, Tea Trolley 901 features two shelves and a solid birch handle. Twin wheels with a lightweight structure allow the trolley to be easily manoeuvred and parked at will. Designed 85 years ago, the trolley remains one of Alvar Aalto’s most beloved designs and feels as radically modern as ever.

In addition to the Aalto Tea Trolley, twentytwentyone will be launching more limited editions of classic designs and exclusive products as the year progresses. Each release celebrates a designer that has played an important role in the twentytwentyone story.

Aino and Alvar Aalto’s furniture made their international debut in London. “Wood Only,” the first show dedicated to the Aaltos’ designs, opened at Fortnum & Mason on 13 November 1933. Organised by the architectural writer Philip Morton Shand and Architectural Review editor Hubert de Cronin Hastings, the exhibition opening attracted illustrious guests, including poet John Betjeman, artist László Moholy-Nagy, and the Aaltos themselves. Favourable reviews, including in The Times, led to considerable commercial success and substantial orders for Aalto furniture.

By December 1933, the company Finmar Limited was established as the sole importer of Aalto furniture in the United Kingdom. The Helsinki-based company became the distributor of Aalto furniture worldwide and has maintained strong relationships with partners in the UK ever since. twentytwentyone has been representing Artek since its inception in 1996.

The anniversary edition of the Tea Trolley is exclusively available at twentytwentyone, Artek Helsinki and Artek Tokyo.
