Contour chair, 1949

Contour Chair by Børge Mogensen for Carl Hansen & Son.

Børge Mogensen's Contour Chair has been re-introduced 70 years after it first launched at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition in 1949.

The classic chair embodies Mogensen's organic design language, the rounded backrest and curved, backward sloping seat offering comfort and flexibility. The chair features numerous recognisable traits of the designer, including mortise and tenon joints in contrasting wood.

The design was a significant departure from Mogensen's usual preference for solid wood, the use of form-pressed veneer illustrated the possibilities of new materials and technologies.

The Contour's lightness in form and distinct silhouette provides a stand-out sculptural element to any space.

Carl Hansen opened his furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908 and soon became known for the high quality of his work.

In the early days, the company produced bespoke furniture – including everything from dining room sets to bedroom suites. As the company grew and times changed, however, it gradually began to produce smaller series of its most popular pieces. This combination of hand craftsmanship and rational series production soon became the firm’s hallmark – and continues to set it apart today.
