Folding chair, 1932

Folding chair by Mogens Koch for Carl Hansen.

The Folding chair designed by Mogens Koch in 1932 is a tribute to the classic director's chair.

The uniquely self-stabilising Folding chair - the act of sitting in the chair gives it stability - was designed for a competition of supplementary chairs for a church. Koch's aim was to design a new version of a traditional folding stool, combining an easy folding functionality with modern aesthetics.

The Folding chair is an elegant alternative to supplementary seating and a clever folding mechanism makes it easy to both set up and pack away the chair.

Carl Hansen opened his furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908 and soon became known for the high quality of his work.

In the early days, the company produced bespoke furniture – including everything from dining room sets to bedroom suites. As the company grew and times changed, however, it gradually began to produce smaller series of its most popular pieces. This combination of hand craftsmanship and rational series production soon became the firm’s hallmark – and continues to set it apart today.
