Rampa desk, 1965
Rampa desk by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Karakter.
Inspired by the display stands traditionally used by Florists in Italian town squares, the Rampa desk is a multifunctional and witty design.
The stepped, glass-topped surfaces on one side of the unit serve as bookshelves, with a flap door concealing a storage compartment in the lower large step.
The opposite side features further storage compartments and a larger fold-down desk surface that transforms the unit into a writing desk. Further storage, including six drawers of diminishing sizes, are revealed when the desk is folded down.
The unit stands on castors with brakes which allow it to be moved about with ease and fixed in place as required.

Copenhagen-based company Karakter produces a select range of classic and contemporary furniture and lighting from some of the leading lights of twentieth-century design.
Their impressive rosta of progressive designs includes classic works from luminaries such as Achille Castiglioni, Joe Colombo and contemporary figures such as Aldo Bakker.
Karakter defines its philosophy as "seeking out designs that are out of the ordinary - from designers who have already written the history of design to those who are aspiring to write its future."
