In 1949, one of Sweden's largest publishers, Bonniers Folkbibliotek, held a competition to design a new kind of bookcase that would be affordable, wall-mounted, expandable, and hold at least two metres of books.
Nisse Strinning, with the help of his wife, Kajsa, won the award with the now iconic String shelving. The original design included blue wall panels, adjustable pine shelves, and the same dimensions as today.
As a child, Nisse had already designed and built his own bookcase, so when he entered the competition, the idea of the String bookshelf was almost ready to go. Kajsa refined Nisse's raw industrial designs, creating detailed technical drawings which helped bring the design to fruition.
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the String shelf, String has produced a limited series of award-winning designs in the original blue panel and pine shelving.
