The Carimate golf club was designed and constructed from 1958-61. Whilst the scheme aimed to avoid the archetypal British golf club, with modernist tone and references to Adolf Loos, it also maintained a vernacular of north Italy with shutters and some areas of tiled roof. The restaurant interior followed a rustic and timeless feel and was furnished with Magistretti designs.

The Carimate chair employed a rush seat referring to traditional Italian seating and a beech frame in various finishes, mostly red to echo the columns and architectural elements in the building. The frame design gains personality through its shape, flared to expose the points where structural depth is required. The bold and robust design perfectly suited the needs of the project as a durable, yet individual design.

‘to be truly contemporary one must always have a hand in the past and a hand in the future’.

Commercial production followed the completion of the project and it soon became an icon for both Magistretti and Italian design. Its distribution was complex with Cassina holding a license for most countries, Artemide for Italy and in 1962 the chair was licensed to Conran for the UK market.

In 1963 a chair without arms, stool and bench were launched to create a family of designs.

The Carimate has recently been relaunched by Fritz Hansen.

Vico Magistretti trained as an architect and started his career in 1945 working for his father’s architectural practice. It was however his move into industrial design, particularly furniture and lighting that cemented his position as one of the worlds most successful furniture designers. He was acknowledged with many awards and titles including several Gold Medals at the Milan Triennale.

He worked across materials and mediums and established long-lasting relationships with important Italian manufacturers including Artemide, Cassina, Kartell and Depadova where he was the art director.

His career extended to over 40 years and included teaching at the Royal College of Art during the 1970s, whilst his architectural and design work continued alongside, with innovation in plastics continuing with Fritz Hansen’s Maui chair into the late 1990s.

Alongside Achille Castiglioni, Marco Zanuso and Gio Ponti he is considered one of the founding fathers of Italian design.
