To celebrate 25 years of the relaunch of the Wall Clocks and 75 years of their original launch to market, Vitra has released a limited edition of the Ball Clock in four colourways based on different times of the day: Dawn, Sunrise, Sunset and Dusk.
Although launched in 1949, George Nelson began designing the Wall Clocks in 1947. For his research, he analysed how people used clocks, discovering two key things: people primarily read the time by observing the position of the hands and most people at the time wore wrist watches. As such, he concluded that the numbers were unnecessary and that clocks had evolved into more of a decorative element.
The wall-mounted Ball Clock was one of Nelson's first designs for the collection and has since earned its place as a recognised icon of American mid-century modernism.
Herman Miller has the sole license for the George Nelson collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore, exporting these products from the U.K. to these countries is not possible. For more information, please get in touch with Herman Miller.
Only 600 pieces of each colour variant will be produced for the special edition clock.
