Zig Zag Chair
Zig Zag Chair by Gerrit T. Rietveld for Cassina.
During the early 1930s, Metz & Co. asked Gerrit Rietveld to design a chair for mass production. Embracing the challenge, the architect presented a daring concept - a Z-shaped chair made from four sturdy elm panels. The chair is supported by dovetail joints and metal screws, and despite its armless and legless structure, it is surprisingly comfortable and robust.
The seat, aptly named the Zig Zag chair, quickly gained recognition and is now widely considered a design masterpiece. It is one of the early examples of a cantilevered solid wood chair and is now available in a range of finishes; natural cherry wood, natural ash and a range of different coloured ash wood stains.
