Eames Fiberglass Barstool
Eames Fiberglass Barstool by Charles + Ray Eames for Vitra.
In 1948, Charles and Ray Eames won second prize when participating in the 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design' held by the New York Museum of Modern Art. Their chair design featured a shell seat moulded to the contours of the body in metal with a concept for a variety of accompanying bases.
Due to the complexity and high cost of mass production, they sought to find an alternative for the metal, eventually discovering glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin. Primarily used for military application, the Eameses recognised the qualities of the material: mouldability, strength and suitability to industrial manufacturing processes.
The first to use the material for furniture design, the tactile quality of the fibreglass enhanced the organic, moulded form of the chair to provide optimal comfort.
The Eames Fiberglass Stool boasts a versatile design with a four-legged base available in two different heights to suit various settings. Each base is thoughtfully designed with a footrest for added comfort and is finished with either a sleek black powder coating or a polished chrome finish.
The Eames DSW chair is also available in plastic shell version. Also available with seat upholstery here.
Herman Miller has the sole license for the Charles and Ray Eames collection in the U.S. and the Far East. Therefore the export of these products from the UK to the U.S. is not possible.
