Eames Fiberglass RAR Armchair

Eames Fibreglass RAR armchair by Charles + Ray Eames for Vitra.

The Eames Fibreglass RAR chair is the result of the Charles and Ray Eames entry to the 'International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design' organised by the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1948. The shell of the chair was moulded to fit the contours of the human body and featured a variety of bases. The design was too complex for mass production due to material limitations.

This led to them using glass-fibre reinforced polyester resin, which until then had been primarily restricted to military applications such as aircraft radomes and cockpit covers.  The RAR armchair features dyed-through, glass-fibre reinforced polyester (fibreglass) similar to the earliest models. The base features a wire base with cross struts with solid maple runners available in a dark-maple or golden-maple finish.

RAR stands for Rocking Armchair with Rod Base.
