Poul Kjaerholm PK9, 1961 E. Kold Christensen

The PK9 chair is considered to be one of Kjaerholm’s most beautiful designs. The elegant tri-pod base fuses with a highly sculptural seat. The shape of the seat is a development of a steel-rod chair from 1953 that was not produced. The evocative shape is covered in an envelope of leather, whose pattern-making is a significant design accomplishment. The design for a minimal, sweeping, three-legged base is both individual and quietly expressive, giving the chair a visually light appearance. The organic and curved lines of both seat and base provide elasticity in use and create a wholly artistic design.

As with many of Kjaerholm’s designs, the PK9 is minutely detailed and its simplicity disguises great craftsmanship in the marriage of machined and handfinished elements.

This chair is from the first production by Ejvind Kold Christensen, Denmark.
