Rana lounge chair, 1946

Rana lounge chair by Nanna Ditzel for Sika Design.

Prior to graduating as a furniture designer from The School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1946, Nanna Ditzel worked as a cabinet maker. Shortly after graduating, Ditzel founded her own design studio with Jørgen Ditzel. Born in 1923, Ditzel was designing at a time where new materials and processes were emerging. She embraced the challenge, producing experimental and innovative pieces in a wide array of materials including fibreglass, wicker and rubber. As well as furniture design, Ditzel worked across other disciplines, exploring jewellery, tableware, applied arts and textiles.

Despite working in a very male-dominated industry, Ditzel succeeded in becoming a highly successful, acclaimed designer, with a career spanning 60 years. Her works are to this day still in constant production, with furniture ranges for Fredericia, Getama and Sika, textiles for Kvadrat and jewellery for Georg Jensen.

Produced by Sika as part of the Icons range. With the utmost respect to the original designs, Sika has put the chairs of Arne Jacobsen, Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel, Viggo Boesen and R.Wengler back into production. Significant names in Danish design history, they remain important for their groundbreaking creations and experimental use of materials. In their own way, each designer performed magic with the sturdy qualities of rattan and wicker.

Sika Design strives to supply sustainable and comfortable quality furniture manufactured with respect for the environment and social accountability.

Founded in 1940 by Ankjær Andreasen, Sika Design remains a family-run business producing handmade wicker furniture. The company focus on comfort, quality and sustainability in all design and manufacturing processes.
