Hanging egg chair, 1959

Hanging egg chair by Nanna Ditzel for Sika Design.

Prior to graduating as a furniture designer from The School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1946, Nanna Ditzel worked as a cabinet maker. Shortly after graduating, Ditzel founded her own design studio with Jørgen Ditzel. Born in 1923, Ditzel was designing at a time when new materials and processes were emerging and produced experimental pieces in a wide array of materials including fibreglass, wicker and rubber.

Despite working in a male-dominated industry, Ditzel became a highly successful designer, with a career spanning 60 years. Her works are still in constant production to this day.

Founded in 1940 by Ankjær Andreasen, Sika Design remains a family-run business producing handmade wicker furniture. The company focus on comfort, quality and sustainability in all design and manufacturing processes.

Produced by Sika as part of the Icons range, most are familiar with the iconic design of the egg-shaped chair floating in the air. The Hanging Egg Chair is a critically acclaimed design that has enjoyed praise worldwide ever since the distinctive sculptural shape was created by Nanna Ditzel in 1959.

An outdoor version is also available. See the Product Range below.
