Heritage Drum table
‘Drum’ table by Robert Heritage for Archie Shine Ltd, UK. c.1965
This design by Robert Heritage typifies his refined and subtle approach towards furniture. Referring to historical precedents, the table recalls Regency centre tables with its deep profile, central pedestal and exotic veneer finish.
The inset drawers add functionality and extend the application toward being suitable a library or office/study table. Using solid and veneered rosewood, the table is made to extremely high standards by British cabinet maker Archie Shine. The retrained design, with inset drawer pulls, makes a gesture toward decoration through the channelled relief, which was echoed in the cabinets from the same family.
The construction of the circular top of such depth and with drawers is a complex and costly construction, rarely seen in contemporary furniture.
The partnership between Heritage and Archie Shine began in the late 1950’s and continued through the 1960s. The designs by Robert Heritage embraced classical elements though were thoroughly modern in proportion and detailing.
Robert Heritage is largely overlooked as a designer. He was awarded more COID (Council Of Industrial Design) design awards by the Design Council than any other British designer in the 20th Century. His worked extended from industrial products to lighting, and even to furniture for the QE2. Heritage was acknowledged as Royal Designer for Industry, awarded a CBE and was professor of furniture at the Royal College of Art.
