Karuselli chair, 1964
The iconic Karuselli chair was designed in 1964 and has been in almost continuous production ever since. Kukkopuro applied ergonomic theories to provide high comfort levels for the user. The fibreglass shell reflects the human form. The seat is cradled within a sprung-steel frame that allows a swivelling and rocking motion. The leather upholstery is pattern cut to hug the internal form. Available with white or black shell and various leather colours, the Karuselli was quickly recognised as a design classic.
The chair offered is an Avarte production.
Professor Kukkopura was acknowledged as Honorary Royal Designer for Industry in 2002 and he has been awarded prizes internationally. His work is represented in the V&A, MOMA and Vitra Design Museum. He began his career working for Ilmari Tapiovaara and went on to become a central figure in Finnish Functionalism. His research into ergonomic design is highly respected.
