PYL Collection

We are excited to host the UK launch of the new PYL lighting collection by Marie et Alexandre for Petite Friture.

To mark the occasion there is an installation at our Upper Street store from 16th February until the 4th March.

Marie Cornil and Alexandre Willaume’s first lighting collection for Petite Friture launches exclusively at twentytwentyone this month.
 
The design duo first met at the 13th Design Parade in Hyères in 2018, later working together at the studio of the Bouroullec Brothers in Paris. Their complementary backgrounds in painting, sculpture and textiles were the perfect foundation for collaboration. Establishing an approach at the intersection of art and design, they were selected for the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris, winning the IKEA Foundation grant and being named CNAP laureates for their work 'Creating a Vase' in 2023.
 
Initially conceived and exhibited at their first solo show, Horizon, at Galerie Signé in 2022. The PYL Collection has been further developed with Petite Friture as a family encompassing five models, taking inspiration and visual cues from pylons, signals, and beacons. It comprises precisely proportioned, pared-back geometric forms in a graphic colour palette. The hues evoke Italian design of the 20th century in vivid yellow and chilli red married with neutrals—white, black, and raw steel.
 
The concept emerged through the study of tension between suspended objects, proffering a modular approach to lighting. The series consists of pendant, floor, and wall lights in pressed glass paired with polished or painted steel. The pressed glass discs emit a soft, directional glow, while the conical reflectors create a sharp beam, the series utilising integrated, replaceable LEDs to create dimmable light. Each piece with its linear design is striking alone but creates a unique rhythm of balance, shape, and colour when arranged together, elevating each form.
