2024 In Review

As we move through January, we thought we should take a moment to reflect on a few standout designs from last year.

From contemporary Dezeen Award winners to important historic reissues, explore a few noteworthy furniture designs that captured our attention in 2024.

MIKADO

Barber Osgerby's latest chair design for Vitra, Mikado, is characterised by its sleek aesthetic and exceptional comfort provided by an innovative tilting back mechanism. The dining chair not only brings comfort into a new landscape but focuses on sustainability. Each component is replaceable to extend its lifespan and can be dissembled and recycled should it ever reach an end to its useful life.

FANEERI

The Faneeri folding chair by Jonas Forsman won the prestigious Dezeen Award 2024design project of the year. The pared-back design elegantly marries comfort and practicality, crafted from thin cross-laminated veneers. The unfolded chair provides a naturally curved backrest that, once folded, becomes flat, further reducing its minimal mass for ease of storage.

MAASTO DINING CHAIR

Designed by Ronan Bouroullec, the Maasto range presents Vaarnii’s first exploration into using composite wood. Crafted with a solid pine backrest and seat and specially developed pine plywood sides for strength. The chair’s simple design and construction contrast the natural patterns of pine, elevating and showcasing the inherent beauty of the material.

PILLO SOFA

Willo Perron's first collaboration with Knoll is the Pillo modular sofa. The adaptable collection is characterised by plush modules, their forms reminiscent of a stack of oversized pillows that exude an all-encompassing comfort. With deep seats in two depths, ideal for lounging, the inviting design can be personalised to your chosen configuration to suit your space.

RFH COLLECTION

In 1951, the Royal Festival Hall was Robin Day's first extensive furniture commission. The newly reissued RFH Collection by the Danish manufacturer &Tradition encompasses a dining armchair, lounge chair, outdoor chair and outdoor table. Updated utilising FSC-certified wood and designed for disassembly, enabling easier repair, renovation and replacement of parts.

SELSDON TABLE

Designed by William Plunkett in 1963, the Selsdon Coffee Table is one of Plunkett’s most rationalist designs. The frame is constructed from flat-bar steel arranged in a simple continuous structure of welded and cut steel. The plate glass top ‘floats’ within the frame and appears as if it could ‘fold’ into the open void at either end. The table was reissued by twentytwentyone at The Plunkett Plan, a William Plunkett retrospective during the London Design Festival in September.

KIGO TABLE

The beautifully crafted Kigo series by GamFratesi consists of four organically formed tables inspired by Isamu Noguchi's stone sculptures. The tables elegantly blend light and dark tones, featuring deftly carved bowls in contrasting wood. The designs are striking alone or arranged in dynamic compositions.

DAYSTAK COLLECTION

As previously mentioned, in 2024 &Tradition partnered with the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation to reintroduce several of Robin Day's iconic designs. Having sourced many vintage examples over the years at twentytwentyone, we are delighted to see this range back in production. The Daystak collection, originally named Hillestak, highlights Day’s skill for blending form with utility. Consisting of a chair, table and desk, the pared-back, stacking designs feature a characteristic A-formation leg crafted in durable materials to suit the proportions of the typical home.

PEACE LOUNGE CHAIR

Inspired by the archetypal Adirondack chair, Faye Toogood's Peace Outdoor Collection emerged through play, creating maquettes using lollipop sticks. The design was then translated to heat-treated Finnish pine to craft a robust lounge chair and footstool as sculptural elements to enhance any outdoor space

SINE

SINE by Stockholm-based collective Note Design Studio, is a contemporary outdoor collection which takes its name from the fluid curves of the mathematical wave Sine, seen in its gentle arcs and the continuous lines of its frame. Available in a fresh colour palette, the collection is crafted from powder-coated stainless steel, featuring a cantilevered base inspired by classic Swedish outdoor furniture.
