Mitcham armchair, 1966
Mitcham armchair by William Plunkett.
The Mitcham chair reflects many of Plunkett’s aesthetic and theoretical aims to achieve functional elegance. The design is distinguished by its minimal aluminium frame and reduced structural elements. The upholstered elements float within the design. The arm and back act in cantilever, providing the user with a degree of movement, and thus fulfilling the designer's quest for comfort. The Mitcham is a generous chair, offering good width and curved plywood planes for seat and back.
Plunkett designed a table and side-chair to complete the Mitcham family, however the production was limited and period examples are scarce.
