Poul Norreklit cabinet | 1967
Cabinet by Poul Norreklit, c.1967
Constructed in wood, aluminium and acrylic, the Poul Norreklit cabinet was one of a family of designs sharing the same mix of materials. The range included a desk, drawer units and shelving. The distinctive combination was produced by Selectform, Denmark to extremely high quality levels and aimed at the top end of the market. The aluminium tambour creates an almost seamless front elevation, whilst allowing for flexible access to the veneered interior without the need for hinged doors. The minimal carcass design is sensitively supported through visually lightweight and futuristic panels of clear acrylic. The use of structural acrylic was used on all the other designs within the family and became a distinguishing element.
Poul Norreklit was highly regarded for his designs for storage. A strictly modern approach unified his work, with long, low-slung units with unadorned facades. The favoured use of high quality materials and construction made for minimal case furniture in rosewood or combined materials.
He also worked successfully with upholstered seating, creating long low sofa systems for Selectform and several other Danish companies. His seating pursued similar rigorous design principles being in flat-bar steel and leather.
