Geoffrey Harcourt

Geoffrey D. Harcourt born in 1935, started his exploration of design whilst studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

In the 1960s Harcourt started collaborating with Dutch furniture brand Artifort, and in 1962 he designed his first series of seating for Artifort with a focus on office fauteuils. His eccentric and experimental designs, gave Artifort an introduction to the international market, specifically for contract design.

His early designs are most known for seating for reception rooms, including the 042 series, which was a global success recognised for its unique form and shapes. His philosophy is that the chair should focus on the person and not the other way around. “First the person, then the chair.” Harcourt has won many prizes and in 1978 was awarded the title of "Royal Designer for Industry".
