John Ward Pawson is a British architectural designer known for his minimalist aesthetic and design approach, which focuses on addressing fundamental issues of space, proportion, light, and materials.
Originally from Halifax, Yorkshire, Pawson moved to Japan in his mid-twenties after working briefly in textiles. There, he visited the studio of Japanese architect and designer Shiro Kuramata. Upon returning to England, he enrolled at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and later established his practice in 1981.
While private houses remain central to Pawson's work, he has also undertaken larger projects, including the Sackler Crossing at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and a flagship store for Calvin Klein.
Pawson was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to Design and Architecture.
