Miguel Milá

Miguel Milá was born in Barcelona in 1931 into a family with strong ties to the artistic world; it was his uncle, Pedro Milá Camps, who commissioned Gaudí to build the famous Casa Milá, in Barcelona. In the 1950s, Miguel began working as an interior designer alongside his brother, Alfonso Milá, creating furniture and lighting designs using raw materials that were not commonly used at the time.

Fascinated by material experimentation, Milá abandoned his architectural studies to explore more practical craftsmanship. This led him to establish Trabajos Molestos in 1957 with Francisco Ribas Barangé and Eduardo Pérez Ulibar. The company, now known as Tramo, focused on designing and producing interior furniture, creating classic designs like the Cestita table lamps and the TMM Floor lamp, both still in production today.

Milá's influence extended beyond his design work. He was a key figure in discussions about Barcelona's aesthetics and architectural modernity and played a pivotal role in establishing ADI-FAD, the first industrial design association in Spain. His leadership as the association's president from 1974 to 1984 left a lasting impact on the design community.

In addition to his contributions to ADI-FAD and his accolades as a designer, Milá taught for 14 years at the ELISAVA and EINA design schools. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the National Design Award (1987), the Compasso D'Oro (2008), and six ADI-FAD award, as well as receiving the prestigious Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2016) from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture in Spain.
