The Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo in 1961. She is a graduate of both the Madrid Polytechnic and Milan Polytechnic, with an architecture qualification.
Urquiola now lives and works in Milan, first moving for her studies, where she was taught by the iconic lighting designer Achille Castiglioni. She started her career as Castiglioni's assistant lecturer, then moving to work for De Padova's development office. In 2001 she opened her own studio, collaborating with brands to create furniture, lighting and textile designs.
Her work is internationally acclaimed; she was awarded the Gold Medal of fine arts by the Spanish Government, the designer of the year for wallpaper and given the title 'order of Isabella the catholic' by the King of Spain Juan Carlos I.
