Peter Collingwood

Peter Collingwood (1922–2008) was a British weaver celebrated for transforming textile craft into modern art. Originally trained as a doctor, he turned to weaving after World War II, captivated by the structural possibilities of the loom. Collingwood became renowned for his intricate macrogauze wall hangings and technically precise textiles that merged geometry, rhythm, and texture.

His work combined traditional craftsmanship with a deep curiosity for form and technique, often exploring the interplay of materials such as linen, wool, and steel. Beyond his own practice, Collingwood was a dedicated teacher and author of influential books, such as The Techniques of Rug Weaving and The Techniques of Woven Structures, which remain cornerstones for contemporary weavers.

Innovative, analytical, and deeply committed to his craft, Peter Collingwood redefined weaving as both an art and a science, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire makers worldwide.
