Richard Schultz

Richard Schultz was born in 1926 and studied at the Iowa State University and Illinois Institute of Technology before joining Knoll in 1951 to work with Harry Bertoia. There he designed some iconic designs such as the Petal Table, the Wire Mesh Chaise and the Leisure collection, now sold as 1966 collection.

Richard left Knoll in 1972 to freelance then founded Richard Schultz Design with his son Peter in 1992. This provided him with the freedom to produce more daring pieces and re-launch classic designs such as the Topiary, Swell and 1966 collections.

Richard Schultz and Knoll’s paths crossed again when the Schultzes eventually agreed to sell their company to Richard’s former employer in 2012.

Richard and his wife Trudy are now retired in Vermont where Richard is focusing on a small scale metal sculpture work.
