Chushin Kobo
Chushin Kobo is a Japanese studio dedicated to bringing the beauty of traditional casting into contemporary life. Founded in 1997 by designer Hisanori Masuda, the workshop creates objects that honour heritage while embracing modern design.
Born in 1949 in Shizuoka Prefecture, Masuda studied fine arts and design at Musashino Art University under Prof. Mosuke Yoshitake and later worked as his assistant, revitalising local industries through design. This experience shaped his philosophy: traditional craft is not merely conservative but a harmonious balance of strength and subtlety that enhances everyday life.
At Chushin Kobo, Masuda designs and produces each piece himself in iron, aluminium, and bronze. The studio’s creations combine the textures and forms of Japanese casting with contemporary design, establishing a “new tradition” that brings timeless craft into modern living.
