901 tea trolley, 1936

901 tea trolley by Alvar Aalto for Artek.

Artek stands for art and technology. The Finish company is renowned as one of the most innovative contributors to modern design. Distinguished by their clean lines, quality and longevity, all Artek products are made using a combination of traditional craftsmanship and new techniques.

Alvar Aalto designed his tea trolley in 1936, refining an often fussy and decorative item of furniture into minimal and graceful form. It has since become a classic of modern Scandinavian design.

The 901 tea trolley has a structure formed from two loops of natural lacquered birch which accommodate two large white wheels with black rubber treads. A handle spans the rear width of the trolley, allowing it to be moved with ease.

In 2015 Artek launched a reinterpretation of Aalto's original design by Hella Jongerius, which offers this design classic with a black lacquered frame.
