2209 three-seat sofa, 1962

2209 three-seat sofa by Børge Mogensen for Fredericia.

The 2209 two and three-seat sofas and 2207 armchair are part of a fully upholstered suite designed by Børge Mogensen in 1963. The simple, yet the character of the design is a continuation of the master, Kaare Klint’s, sofas from the 1920s, which inspired details such as the curve in the armrest and the arch of the back.

Børge Mogensen graduated from the School of Architecture with a clear mission. He wanted to create quality furniture that everyone could afford. Yet 20 years later, he designed the sofas and chairs that now furnish cabinet ministers offices and Danish embassies around the world.

The first of the iconic sofas were released in 1962, followed by many different variations, evolving into institutions of Danish design.

Fredericia was first established as the Fredericia Stolefabrik (Fredericia Chair Factory) in 1911 and specialised in antique style furniture.

Fredericia was first established as the Fredericia Stolefabrik (Fredericia Chair Factory) in 1911 and specialised in antique style furniture.

In 1955 the languishing company was acquired by Andreas Graversen who scrapped the existing product line and created a new one with the help of young architect, Børge Mogensen.

The company was taken over by Graversen's son, Thomas Graversen, in 1995. He led the company into the new century with a more fluid approach to design and production. Together with designers like Nanna Ditzel, he created a number of internationally recognised furniture pieces while at the same time continuing to produce the best of Mogensen's designs.
