Bench for Two

Bench for Two by Nanna Ditzel for Fredericia.

Originally unveiled in 1989, Nanna Ditzel’s Bench for Two is a striking expression of the designer’s playful and unconventional approach to furniture. More than a simple seat, the bench was conceived as an invitation to connection, with two gently angled seats encouraging conversation and shared presence.

Crafted in Denmark from solid maple and aircraft-grade maple veneer, the sculptural form balances technical precision with artistic freedom. Its distinctive graphic backrest, defined by concentric circles and a single red dot, originated from a spontaneous sketch drawn directly onto the prototype by Ditzel herself. Inspired in part by the symmetry of butterfly wings, the bench combines organic elegance with a bold visual identity.

An integrated side table sits adjacent to the two seats, carefully aligned with the bench’s geometric angles to create a practical yet intimate setting. Relaunched by Fredericia and A. Petersen in both the original black finish and vivid contemporary colourways, Bench for Two remains an enduring example of furniture as emotional and expressive design.
