Robin Day | Interplan Writing Desk W | 1954
Interplan Writing Desk W by Robin Day for Hilleplan.
The Unit W, Interplan desk was created as a contemporary reinterpretation of a classical drop-front desk from the 18th Century. The Shakers later produced a tall, plain example known as the ‘cupboard desk’ in the early 19th Century. This restrained modernist design by Robin Day marries the combination of drawers with a pull-down unit, creating a practical desk and storage solution highly suited to a domestic lounge or bedroom space.
The simple, bronzed handles and black-painted steel legs contrast with the mahogany case and ash drawer fronts, complementing the functional mahogany layout within.
Manufactured by Hille, Day created a versatile range of units designed to work singularly or as part of a system.
The celebrated Interplan range was designed in 1954 and exhibited at the Milan Triennale in the same year.
Robin Day is Britain’s most renowned furniture designer of the 20th Century era. Having won the Museum of Modern Art’s prestigious Low-Cost Furniture Competition in 1948, he went on to design an exceptional and respected cross-section of furniture in a career spanning more than 60 years.
An acute understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, aligned with progressive design skills led to numerous landmarks in the history of furniture design. His polypropylene seating is acknowledged as the world’s best-selling chair.
Robin Day’s achievements are not restricted to furniture and his industrial designs, exhibitions, graphics and interiors are highly respected for individual flair and modernist sensibilities.
Alongside his wife, textile designer Lucienne Day, the couple are revered and acknowledged for introducing contemporary design to Britain.
