Wassily Lounge Chair | Bauhaus Era

Wassily Lounge Chair | Bauhaus Era by Marcel Breuer for Knoll.

At the 2024 Salone del Mobile, Knoll announced three new ultra-matte frame finishes for the iconic Wassily chair, giving the seat an entirely new visual identity. The colours were carefully chosen to reflect the aesthetic identity of the Bauhaus school while also aligning with early productions of Mies van der Rohe, the third and final director of the Bauhaus, which often featured frames painted in white and a deep red.

The Wassily Chair, designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925 while working as an apprentice at the Bauhaus, is considered a true icon of modern design. Inspired by the bicycle structure and guided by the constructivist principles of the De Stijl movement, the designer simplified the traditional club chair to its fundamental lines and planes. This chair is considered one of the first tubular steel furniture designs and has had a lasting impact on the evolution of furniture design.

Initially named the Model B3, it eventually garnered the name Wassily Chair as a tribute to Wassily Kandinsky, a fellow Bauhaus instructor and contemporary of Breuer, who greatly admired the design.
