Robin Day | Forum Sofa | 1964
Forum Sofa by Robin Day for Hille.
There sofas are available to purchase individually at £4,250, or as a pair for £8,000.
The Forum sofa and armchair range expresses an overtly luxurious feeling with a strong architectural aesthetic. Robin Day explored principles forged by Le Corbusier with an exposed external structure that contained and supported the soft seating within.
Using rosewood panels supported on chromed steel pillars, the construction was clearly defined. The rosewood frame was joined through expressive comb-joints and the loose cushions upholstered in leather.
By exposing the frame and finishing this structure in a decorative manner, the design challenged traditional upholstered furniture typologies. The strict rectilinear frame is generously proportioned offering high levels of comfort.
The Forum, produced by Hille, utilised expensive materials and production costs were high in comparison to the other Day designs the manufacturer produced. Although the design was aimed at both commercial and domestic environments, the price meant it was outside the budget for most homes and projects in the 60s-70’s period. The design ceased production by Hille in 1976, as such examples from the original Hille production in rosewood are extremely rare and few original Hille versions are known to exist. Forum was later made by Habitat with an oak frame, and more recently by Case Furniture in oak and walnut.
Provenance
Single ownership from new, the sofas belonged to Michael and Anne Sydney, lifelong friends of Robin and Lucienne Day. Michael was also a mountaineering colleague of Robin.

This is a one off vintage item that is also on display in store. Therefore it can only be purchased once availability has been confirmed. If you wish to purchase please call 020 7288 1996 or enquire.
