To mark ten years of the Hotaru range, twentytwentyone presents 30 limited-edition Marker Pendants, created with Barber Osgerby and Japanese lantern makers Ozeki & Co. Ltd. Each shade features a hand-painted design in a contemporary coral red colour.
Specialising in handmade paper lanterns since 1891, Ozeki & Co. hand-paints each pendant at their workshop in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The craftspeople, known for their detailed illustrations on traditional lanterns, bring the same precision and sensitivity to this contemporary edition.
Hotaru, named after the Japanese word for 'firefly,' draws on traditional lantern-making. Each piece features translucent washi paper, derived from mulberry bark and stretched over a bamboo frame, creating an interplay of light, texture, and structure.
The collaboration with Barber Osgerby began in 2015, launching Hotaru at the London Design Festival with the Buoy and Double Bubble pendants. It builds on a long-standing relationship with twentytwentyone.
