Robert Heritage, Bridgeford Cabinet, 1965

Bridgeford Cabinet by Robert Heritage for Archie Shine

This cabinet design by Robert Heritage typifies his bold, yet refined approach towards case furniture. Using solid and veneered rosewood the cabinet is made to extremely high standards by British cabinet maker Archie Shine. There is no apparent hardware as Heritage has employed push catches to the doors to ensure a unified facade to the cabinet. The horizontally rebated twin outer doors provide an architectural feature and texture to the otherwise plain design. It is a strong character and Heritage has moved the design language away from an earlier 1950’s aesthetic of tapering legs towards deep sections, square legs and bold shadow gaps. The Bridgeford echoes the strength and confidence of emerging brutalist architecture. The detailing remains exceptional, and the combination of fine cabinet-making and a mature Robert Heritage hand is evident through the corner and junction details and small drawer set within. The doors are of a pronounced thickness to enhance the strong design, with the inner face veneered in book-matched rosewood and the hinges allow for a full 180-degree opening.

The partnership between Heritage and Archie Shine was longstanding. The designs by Heritage often embraced traditional elements, though were thoroughly modern in proportion and detail. Heritage favoured bold dimensions with long sleek outlines for his cabinets. This was in contrast to most other UK-based designers and manufacturers of the period.

Robert Heritage is a somewhat overlooked designer. He was awarded more COID (Council Of Industrial Design) design awards by the Design Council than any other British designer in the 20th Century. His work extended from industrial products to lighting and included furniture for the QE2. Heritage was acknowledged as Royal Designer for Industry, awarded a CBE and was professor of furniture at the Royal College of Art.
