Robin Day, Chevron chair, 1959, Hille

Chevron chair by Robin Day for Hille.

The Chevron continued a dialogue Day began in the late 1940s in which a minimal steel rod frame provided support and structure for a host of seating and table designs.

The wooden seat profile is an evolution of the 1952 Slat chair, though the Chevron is a far more sophisticated composition of materials and components.

The Chevron chair typifies Robin Day’s rational approach to furniture design. The simple mahogany frame is supported by stove-enamelled steel legs. This A-frame leg is purposefully fixed to the exterior of the wooden seat structure. The Pirelli webbing to the seat and back are also exposed. The design illustrates integrity and desire to leave the structure undisguised

Many of Robin Day’s most important designs reveal such elements of the design composition

The Chevron is a visually lightweight and well proportioned modernist design.

Original Hille production made with mahogany frame. New seat pads and upholstery with Bute Tiree.
