Pelagus | Timeless Teak

We were delighted to host Fritz Hansen’s Ditte Buus Nielsen and Søren Nissen to celebrate the Pelagus collection by Note (design studio) and learn more about teak and the art of maintaining outdoor furniture.

Pelagus | Timeless Teak

Fritz Hansen’s popular Pelagus series by Stockholm-based Note (Design Studio) features clean lines and expansive wood surfaces, promoting a contemporary aesthetic that is confidently enhanced without overwhelming.

The multi-disciplinary studio aimed to create a range with international appeal, that was straightforward but inviting, with careful consideration to ensure longevity in materiality and aesthetics.

The collection, a restrained synthesis of solid teak and powder-coated aluminium, offers lounge and dining solutions and has been extended to include bar stools, cafe and high table options to provide a new hospitality focus.

Teak Workshop

We were delighted to host Fritz Hansen’s Skagerak Design Manager, Ditte Buus Nielsen and Service Consultant, Søren Nissen, who led discussions and a workshop exploring teak as a material and the simple maintenance involved to extend its life.

Fritz Hansen’s outdoor collection is nearly exclusively crafted in teak, due to the wood’s inherent properties, which translate into furniture with a long lifespan, even in the harshest Northern hemisphere conditions. The sturdy hardwood is known for its durability, strength, and resistance to weather and decay, thanks to its natural oils and high density, which make it suitable for use outdoors all year round.

Fritz Hansen recommends cleaning your outdoor furniture at least once a year, although some advocate every second year and others twice a year, depending on the hue of the timber you prefer. Soren’s engaging maintenance demonstration has been summarised here as a simple step-by-step guide below.

Care + Maintenance

1. Mix water and wood cleaning soap (Pine or Linseed soap is also suitable) – recommended dosage: 25ml soap to 5l of water.

2. Rinse the furniture.

3. Scrub the surface of the wood with a semi-soft bristled brush and soapy water in the direction of the wood grain. Repeat with moderate pressure.

4. Rinse with clean water.

NB. Take care to rinse the surface below the furniture after cleaning, as the soap might stain tiles or wood.

Teak will naturally patinate over time, developing a silver-grey hue when exposed to the elements. To maintain the initial golden hue, apply a teak sealer (not oil) once or twice a year after cleaning. Allow the piece to completely dry before applying any treatment.

For further protection, use breathable furniture covers when not in use, especially during the winter. If possible, place the furniture in a shaded area, or rotate pieces to ensure even exposure to the sun.
