Tapio Wirkkala centenary

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Tapio Wirkkala, Iittala has re-released the designer’s mouth-blown glass bottle vases.

Originally in production between 1959 and 1968, the bottle returns to Iittala’s range in a limited edition numbered series. Available during 2015 only, the bottles will bear a centenary engraving and number from 1 to 2015.

Born in Hanko Finland, Wirkkala (1915-1985) garnered a reputation as a versatile designer of graphic arts and notably glassware. Wirkkala’s work includes the Thule highball. Inspired by melting ice, the instantly recognisable textured glass was created in 1960 and remains a classic example of Finnish glassware design.

During production, the Wirkkala bottle vase is blown into a mould and finished with a simple ring of glass around its neck. The simple form makes for a pretty object or a useful carafe or vase. Available in turquoise, grey and moss green, the limited edition vase is now available at twentytwentyone.
