Alexander Girard

Born in 1907 in New York, the designer became famous whilst working at Herman Miller, as head of textiles. His work here combined colour and geometric forms to create bold constellations.  Although he equally delved into the realms of architecture, furniture, exhibition, and interior design. Today his striking, innovative and timelessly modern designs are available through Vitra.

The textile designer Alexander Girard was a decisive figure in American modernism, working with other masters of the movement, including Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.

His work plays with form and shape, with his textile works for companies such as Herman Miller and Vitra, using abstract patterns in bright and contrasting colours or textures.
