Hans-Agne Jakobsson

Born in Gotland in 1919, Swedish designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson worked as a carpenter's apprenticeship and studied architecture in Gothenburg before launching his career as an industrial designer at General Motors.

He then worked for the Swedish furniture designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West and in 1951 founded his own design workshop, creating furniture and household items as well as lighting.

It is for his lighting designs that Jakobsson is today best known. Although perhaps not as recognisable a name as his compatriot and peer Poul Henningsen, his designs are valued for their finely judged unison of materials, design and construction. Typically Scandinavian in appearance and approach, Jakobsson's designs are quiet classics.
