Norman Cherner

Popular for his furniture designs, Norman Cherner started his design career in the Bauhaus tradition of interdisciplinary design, focusing on industrial and home design. In 1948, his first housing developments were built in Ramapo, NY. He became famous for his "Pre-built" houses and worked with the Department of Housing in the US. 

Norman Cherner's popular furniture design pieces include the "multi-flex' modular storage system, the 1958  moulded plywood seating for Plycraft and the "Konwiser Line" of furniture and lighting. The moulded plywood chair is known as the "Cherner Chair", and is his most prominent piece of work, being recognised worldwide. 

Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was a tutor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Alongside being an instructor, Norman Cherner released books including "Fabricating Houses from Component Parts" (1958) and "Make your own Modern Furniture" (1953), which explore aspects of architecture and furniture design.
