AX Chair

AX Chair HM11 by Hvidt + Mølgaard for &Tradition.

Designed by Hvidt & Mølgaard, the AX chair is a midcentury icon, recognised for its distinctive curved armrests that appear to emerge from the frame.

Initially conceived in 1948 for the "International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design", the seat quickly gained international acclaim after it toured 24 localities in the USA, as part of the “Design in Scandinavia” exhibition.

The AX chair demonstrated the designers' complete approach to design, considering construction, production, and packaging for overseas transport. The seat was the first to use industrially shaped plywood in three dimensions, engineered to provide unprecedented comfort without needing upholstery.

The AX was awarded the prestigious Diplôme d’Honneur at the Triennale in Milan in 1951.
