Domus lounge chair, 1946

Domus lounge chair by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Artek.

The characteristic Domus Lounge Chair was designed, alongside the Domus Chair, for the public spaces at the Domus Academica's student housing.

In the 1940's it was not possible to produce the large veneer seat/backrest element from one piece. Only now is the chair being produced as Tapiovaara originally designed it.

As Jukka Savolainen, director of the Helsinki Design Museum explained "Tapiovaara wanted a good design for everyone. He did Ikea before Ikea, good quality pieces at an affordable price – the same kind of packaging and mass production ideas as Ikea has done."
