Corona Chair, 1964

Corona Chair by Poul M. Volther for Fredericia.

Poul M. Volther's Corona Chair is an experimental take on Danish design. A lesson on geometry, the sculptural chair has been a design classic since its design in 1964. With upholstered elliptical-shaped seat pads that descend in size, the eye-catching shape challenges conventional chair designs, earning its worldwide recognition.

After years of experimentation by designer and architect Poul M. Volther, the chair has often been referred to as the 'floating chair' due to its sculptural and light qualities. Following WW2, Volther was keen to design a chair that would require less fabric, due to its short supply. This is where the idea came from to have several cushions with open space in between. The unique composition of seat pads are affixed to a supportive spring-steel 'spine' with a matt chrome finish.

The Corona Chair has appeared in multiple films, music videos, and fashion features, and is widely recognised as Volther's masterpiece, that is still favoured in a range of contracts projects and residential homes.
